2010 Class Schedule & Garden Events
We live in a bountiful and beautiful environment near the coast of Maine. Nature's abundance calls us to reconnect with all of our senses and to develop our skills as gardeners and healers. The 3-acre medicinal herb gardens of Avena Botanicals invite you to renew your relationship with nature's rhythms and wisdom. Come celebrate and deepen your connection to the green plants and to your inner spiritual resources by attending one or more of Avena Botanicals classes and herb walks.

MAY CLASS
Spring Roots and Leaves
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
May 15, Saturday 9:30am - 3:30pm $65
Learn to identify, harvest, make and use medicine from burdock root, dandelion leaf and root, nettle leaf, yellow dock root, chickweed, violet leaf and lovage. This is a hands-on class. Come prepared for digging, nibbling, chopping, eating and delighting in the beauty of spring. We will make a fresh root tincture, leaf infusion, and root decoction, and discuss the health benefits spring roots and greens offer the liver, digestive tract and the body's overall vitality. Joyfully move into spring and summer with nature's healing green allies. Bring your own bag lunch, fresh herb tea provided

1st Annual Early Morning Bird and Wild Plant Walk
May 9, Sunday at Avena Botanicals, 6:30am - 8am
Led by Birder and Herbalist Greg McCrone and Deb Soule. Fee $18.
Limited to 15 participants so please register early. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and long pants.
13th Annual Perennial Plant Sale and Spring Garden Walk
May 9, Sunday at Avena Botanicals. 12-3pm
Organic, field-grown perennials offered by Julie and Pete Beckford of Rebel Hill Farm. Exceptional quality. Support a small, organic, Maine-based business. Bring your mother, grandmother, sister or granddaughter and celebrate Mother's Day at Avena.
Free garden walk led by Herbalist Deb Soule, 1:30-2:30pm.
JUNE CLASSES
Returning To The Sacred Garden
Taught by Permaculturist Julia Yelton and Herbalist Deb Soule
June 12, Saturday 9am - 4pm $75
Join two extraordinary gardeners who weave the principles of permaculture and biodynamics as they teach about how to read and rebuild garden soil using compost teas and biodynamic compost and soil preparations, building compost piles, designing water and flow forms into the landscape, cultivating various perennial fruits and medicinals such as elderberries, hardy kiwi, schisandra berry, solomon seal root, lady's mantle and black cohosh and communicating with the spirit of the plants through meditation and quiet contemplation. Bring your own bag lunch, fresh herb tea provided.
Creating A Flower and Herb Garden for Hummingbirds, Bees and Butterflies
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
June 23, Wednesday 3pm - 5pm, $20
In honor of National Pollinator Awareness Week, Deb will teach about the various medicinal herbs and flowers growing in Avena's gardens that attract and feed pollinators. Information about garden design, placement of plants, medicinal plant uses, and ruby-throated hummingbirds will be included, along with stories of Deb's experiences working alongside a biologist in

Summers' Flowers, Flower Essences, and Fragrances
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
July 24, Saturday 9-3:30pm $75 Includes lab materials for take-home preparations
This special day includes a quiet flower attunement and meditation, learning how to grow, harvest, and prepare several medicinal flowers, making and using flower essences, flower teas, flower baths, facial steams and an herbal face creme. Participants will take home a flower essence and jar of face creme. Space is limited so please register early. Bring your own bag lunch. Fresh herb tea provided.

AUGUST CLASS
Cultivating Joy & Inner Peace: The Ayurvedic Path
Taught by British Herbalist and Ayurvedic Practitioner Anne McIntyre.
August 25, Wednesday 9:30am - 4pm $80
Anne is a clinical herbalist with over 28 years experience and uses both Ayurvedic and western herbs in her practice. This class will cover a range of western and Ayurvedic foods and herbs which calm the mind, enhance mental clarity and focus, ease stress, support a meditative practice, and cultivate joy, peace and inner harmony. Suited for individuals and health care providers. If you are new to Ayurveda, we suggest you read The Yoga of Herbs by Dr. Vasant Lad before attending this class. Bring your own bag lunch. Fresh herb tea provided.

OCTOBER CLASS
Fall Fruits and Roots
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
October 9, Saturday 9:00am - 3:30pm $65
Learn the medicinal properties and how to grow, harvest, prepare and use elderberries, hawthorn berries, rose hips, astragalus root, codonopsis root, teasel root, elecampane root, and solomon's seal root. How to make medicinal soups from reishi, shitake and maitake mushrooms will be addressed along with herbal and nutritional guidelines for keeping the immune system healthy and vital as we go into fall and winter. Bring your own bag lunch and fresh herb tea will be provided. Space is limited so please register early.
